THE BUILDING
Ditchingham parish church is a magnificent building which is well worth a visit, set in a picturesque situation on Belsey Bridge Road to the east of the main Norwich to Bungay road.
The crowning glory of this ancient building is it's lofty tower, reaching almost 100 feet in height. The foundation stone of the tower was laid in 1479 by Bishop Goldwell and it's architect was James Woderofe.
The church has a spectacular black marble war memorial with a life-size bronze effigy designed by Derwent Wood. Unusually, it includes a nurse among the soldiers.
The grave of the writer Henry Rider Haggard can also be found in the church as well as the Rider Haggard Window.
Once a year the church tower is open to visitors for a weekend and the view over the surrounding countryside is quite beautiful.
On Monday evenings the magical sound of church bells can be heard as the bell ringers practice their skills!
VISITING
For anyone wishing to spend a time of quiet or visit the church, the building is kept unlocked during daylight hours throughout the year. The church has toilets (access via a keycode) as well as a small kitchen, good heating, a large car park and plenty of on-road parking.
DIRECTIONS
The church is found on where Belsey Bridge Rd meets Church Rd and is signposted from the main Bungay to Norwich road and is just along from Convent, Emmaus community and Belsey Bridge Conference Centre. For Sat Nav's the postcode is NR35 2JS but that will may not take you exactly to the church door.
